A visit to the historical sites of medicine in France

Abstract

|
Monpellier is a city renowned for her prestigious medical college. The Monpellier Medical College was founded in 12th century and enjoyed her reputation throughout the history. It is the oldest extan medical college in Europe and was the center of medicine in Mediterranean area. From the 18th century, it became the center of vitalism, a doctrine that insists the existence of vital principle that makes living beings different from unanimated objects. The Monpellier vitalists opposed to the iatromecdnists or iatrochemists who claimed to adopt physics and chemistry in favor of medicine. The Monpellier vitalists tried to protect the autonomy of medicine from overwhelming influence of physics and chemistry of the 18th and 19th century.
