Abstract

It is well known that mesenchymal stem cell originated from adjacent periosteum and bone marrow play an important role in bone regeneration process such as fracture healing, bone defect healing and distraction osteogenesis. Recently it has been reported that osteogenic stem cell mobilized from remote site can affect bone regeneration process and the role of angiogenic stem cell has been postulated. Angiogenic stem cell is characterized as cells that are mobilized from remote bone marrow and recruited to ischemic sites to enhance neovascularization. In this review, we will introduce recent studies on the role of angiogenic stem cells in bone regeneration process and suggest possibilities of therapeutic application of angiogenic stem cell based cell therapy for the enhancement of bone regeneration.
