Characteristics of Refractory Schizophrenia

Abstract
Despite a great progress in the treatment of schizophrenia after the introduction of antipsychotics, a substantial minority of ¢¥patients derive little if any benefit from such medication. Treatment of this refractory subgroup represents a major therapeutic challenge.
Recently many researchers focused on this area, but objectine definition on the refractory schizophrenia has not been made.. Keefe et al designated those chronically deteriorated schizophrenic patients as Kraepelin schizophrenics and Kane et al defined non-responsive schizophrenics who showed little response to previous antipsychotics in their recent studies.
The author briefly reviewed the recent research results on refractory schizophrenia, mainly on the demographic and psycho-pathological characteristics, family history study, structural abnormality of brain, and response to clonidine medication.
