Abstract
This study was designed to evaluate the clinical characteristics in patients undergoing reoperation for recurrent intermittent exotropia. We retrospectively investigated the age, type of intermittent exotropia, deviation angle, functional abnormality of oblique muscles, vertical incomitance, amblyopia and operative methods at first operation and reoperation. Average age of 34 patients was 5.53+/-2.43 (2~12) when patients were undergone reoperation. Patients with inferior oblique muscle overaction at first operation were 8 and 11 at reoperation (p=0.295). There was no significant difference between first operation and reoperation in vertical incomitance, vertical deviation, amblyopia and dissociated vertical deviation (DVD). Patients had exotropia at 1 day after first operation. First preoperative deviation angle at far was 31.21+/-7.61 (18~50) PD (prism diopter) and reoperation was 21.21+/-5.31 (12~35) PD. Preoperative deviation angles at reoperation were significantly smaller than those at first operation (p<0.05). Exodeviation at preoperative 1 day and 1 month did contribute significantly to the recurrence and reoperation. Amblyopia, oblique muscle overaction, vertical incomitance, vertical deviation and DVD were did not contribute to the recurrence and reoperation.
