Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease that may affect any organ of the body such as the skin, joint, kidney, nervous system, heart, lung and serous membrane. The peritonitis in SLE is quite common, but it is unusual for peritonitis to be the major presenting manifestation of SLE. In this report, we present a 21-year-old female with peritonitis and ascites as the initial presentation of SLE. In spite of repeated paracentesis, antibiotics, diuretics and steroid treatment, the ascites was not improved. After hemodialysis and the use of immunosuppresive agent, the ascites was controlled. We report this case with a brief review of relevant literatures.
