Effects of the Picture Exchange Communication System on Requesting in the Autistic Preschooler

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) on requesting in the autistic preschooler. The first four phases of PECS were taught to the participant. The intervention procedure was implemented in an inclusive preschool classroom by the classroom teacher. Naturalistic observation was used to collect data on the percentage of requesting desired objects during baseline, intervention, generalization, and follow-up sessions. The Results indicated that the participant mastered PECS and learned to request desired objects. The target behavior of the preschooler was generalized to situations and subjects, and was maintained four weeks after the intervention was finished. The conclusions and suggestions for future studies were addressed.
