Park Hang-Sun

Abstract
This study is a descriptive-correational research to find the differences of degree in body-image, self-esteem, and depression between the obese and the normal weight children and relationship among body-image, self-esteem, and depression of obese children, and obtain primary data for health education toward the obese children whose numbers increasing rapidly at times. The subjects of this study was 5th/6th grade children of elementary schools in Taejeon and Chungju cities. The sample was compromised by 209 obese children and 210 normal weight children which were selected according to health records. The data was collected by means of a self-reported questionnaire during June 11~30, 1998. The instruments were the Body Meaning Scale developed by Osgood, Self-Perception Profile by Harter, and Child Depression Rating Scale by Birleson. The collected data were analysed using the SAS program for frequency, x2 -test, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson¡¯s correlation coefficient and Scheffe¡¯ test. The findings of this study were as follows: 1. The first hypothesis, ¡°The degree of body image score of obese children might be lower than those of normal weight children¡± was supported(t=9.45, p<.0000). 2. The second hypothesis, ¡°The self-esteem degree of obese children might be lower than those of normal weight children¡± was supported(t=4.97, p<.0000). 3. The third hypothesis, ¡°The depression degree of obese children might be higher than those of normal weight children¡± was not supported(t=0.03, p<.9779). 4. The fourth hypothesis, ¡°The relationship among body-image, self-esteem and depression of obese children might be correlated¡± was supported. In conclusion, we have been understood about characteristics of psycho-emotional aspects caused by body-image, selt-esteem, and depression of obese children. Due to recognization of school nurses, there has been developed and carried out various obesity management and prevention programs as school health service. But, the psycho-emotional factors easily were neglected because most programs were focused on physical intervention. For this reason, it have been frequent for obese children to be exposed upon psycho-emotional distress occuring during this kind of program. Therefore, in order to carry out the more effective program for the obese children, it is suggested considering of not only physical but also psycho-emotional aspects. As above mentioned, it is suggested to be collaborative by charge teacher, parents, and school-nurse to bring about positive body-image, and better self-esteem in mind of obese children.
