A Study of Discomfort and Folk Remedies of Women with Arthritis

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to explore the discomfort and folk remedies of women with arthritis. The purposive sampling was conducted and eighty six subjects were all women. Data were collected with face to face interview from April, 1997 to January 1998. Data were analyzed for descriptive statistics using SPSS PC program. The results of this study were as follows: 1.77.4% of women were housewives and 52.4% of subjects had osteoarthritis. 53.5% of subject used folk remedies with hospital treatment as a treatment. 79.6% of subjects complained pain, difficulty of gait, decreased muscle strength, stiffness, fatigue, swelling, difficulty of sleep as a discomfort. 2.Women with arthritis used sixty methods of folk remedies for decreasing pain, thirteen methods of folk remedies for difficulty of gait. 3.neighbor were most important recommendation source of folk remedies. Through this study, it was found that women with arthritis in Korea used folk remedies for decreasing their discomfort. They used various folk remedies in spite of they didn¡¯t know about content and source of certain remedies. It might be harmful. Therefore, education about folk remedies in women with arthritis should be done and weakness and benefit of folk remedies should be taught to the patients, family and neighbor.
