A survey on home health care(HHC) needs of Cerebrovascular accident and Spinal Cord Injury clients

Abstract
This survey research was conducted to identify the needs of Home Health care from Cerebrovascular accident and Spinal cored Cored Injury clients. The level of Activity of Daily Living and the needs of HHC were evaluated by using the questionnare. The subjects for the study were 196, 112 CVA from out patient department of C general hospital and 84 SCI from industrial accident insurance hospital at Daejon. Data collection was done from January to February 2000. The collected data were analysed utilizing SPSS, and the results are as follows: 1.Comparison of HHC needs by demographic characteristics There were statistically significant difference in level of HHC needs between two groups according to age, educational level, paralysis, speech, perception, vision, defecation, urination, and swallowing in CVA, and speech, defecation, and urination in SCI clients. 2.ADL There were statistically significant difference in transfer, toileting, bathing, gait, stair climbing, dressing, defecation, urination and IADL between two groups. The level of dependence of SCI was higher than that of CVA. 3.The relationship beween HHC needs and ADL There were statistically significant corelations between HHC needs and ADL, in CVA(r=.802, p=.000), and in SCI(r=.716, p=.000) 4.The needs of HHC of two groups The SCI groups were greater than CVA groups. The greatest was educational needs in CVA group and physical needs in SCI group. In conclusion, the above results indicate the demands of SCI were greater than those of CVA. There was need to develop various service program and audiovisual resource or leaflet for education in CVA group. For physical needs of SCI group were higher than CVA group, HHC nurse should consider to expand to kinship, friends, volunteer, and respite center instead of main caregiver to prevent from burn out.
