A study on the social support and mental health status of the adolescents

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to descriptive the social support and mental health status of the adolescents. The sample for the study consisted of 815 female and male l, 2, 3 grade adolescents at high school in Chungnam and Taejon. The data were collected for about 20days from December l, 1998 to December 20,1998 The Instruments used for the study were : (a) social support questionnaire translated from Brandt and Weiner¡¯s PRQ¡¤¡¾: (b) SCL-90 developed by and modified by Lee to measure mental health status. In this study, Cronbach¡¯s alpha coefficients were .95 for the SCL-90 developed by and modified by Lee, .86 for the social support questionare.
The findings were as fllows : (1) the score for mental health status had a mean of 97.28 (range from 47 to 210), (the highest score deprssion(2.48), the lowest score were phobic anxiety(l.60)) (2) the score for social support measured by PRQ¡¤¡¾ had a mean of 121.56 (range from 25 to 160) (the highest score were intimacy(5.08), the lowest score were social integration(4.52) (3) the correlation coefficient of mental health status and social support was somewhat negative correlation (r=-.319,p<.001) therefore, a further study is necessary to repeat the qualitative research for exploring factor to be affected adolescents¡¯s mental health and social support , creating construct and tool to measure social support according to age, area, type of school specific. on the basis of the results, it would be recommended to promote social support intervention program for adolescent mental health.
