Relationships among communication competence, communication satisfaction, and job satisfaction for nurses in hospital setting

Abstract
Purpose: This study was to examine the suitability of instruments measuring communication related concepts among nurses through the pilot study, and consequently to examine the relationships among communication competence, communication satisfaction, and job satisfaction for nurses in hospital setting.

Method: This research utilized two stage approach with one group pilot study and a survey of 33 nurses in general hospital in Daejeon.

Result: Six factors of communication competence, 4 factors of communication satisfaction, and 2 factors of job satisfaction were extracted from original instruments by results of the pilot study. Communication competence had positive relationships to communication satisfaction (r£½.50, p£½.003). Job satisfaction was not relationships to communication competence (p£¾.05), but communication satisfaction (r£½.46, p£½.007).

Conclusion: This study revealed that suitable sub factors of communication competence, communication satisfaction, and job satisfaction, and relationships of these concepts for nurses. Consequently, the manager should make effective communication channels and encourage that nurses have more express their opinions. Also, the managers are expected to make constant efforts to create an open culture in hospital.
