The effects of infant massage on growth, behavioral state of infants and postpartum depression of their mothers

Abstract
>Purpose: This study has been conducted on the nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design in quasi experimental basis to identify the effects of infant massage for infant on growth, behavioral state and postpartum depressio.

Methods: The subjects of this study were mothers and their infants who were admitted to one postpartum care center located in Daejeon City between October 4, 2004 and January 30, 2005. In data analysis, SPSS Win. (ver11.5) program was utilized and data were analyzed using ¥Ö©÷-test, t-test and repeated measures of ANOVA.

Result: there was a statistically significant difference in the body weight gain(t£½2.828, p£½.007)and chest circumference increase (t£½2.1221, p£½.040) arcumference increaseafter 4 weeks between experimental group which is provided infant massage and control group In the aspect of behavior status, the experimental group showed statistical significance by showing conversion to a positive state after massage given than the control group(139.303, p£½.001). The depression score increase in both experimental and control groups. But there was no statistically significant difference between two group(t£½0.521, p£½.608).

Conclusion: infant massage it could be applied with systemic nursing intervention plan for the growth and development of infant.
