Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this work was to study the anorexigenic effect of Taeyuemjowui-tang(Taiyintiaowei-tang) in obese Zucker rat, assessing the mRNA of NPY and POMC in hypothalamus.

Methods: Obese Zucker (fa/fa) rats were administered Taeyeumjowui-tang(Taiyintiaowei-tang) (300 mg/kg p.o.) daily for 6 weeks. The control group was administered sterile water. The weight of the whole body, food consumption, NPY and POMC expression, plasma levels of glucose?total cholesterol?triglyceride?free fatty acid, and size of the epididymal fat cells were measured. Statistical comparisons among the normal, control and sample group were done by ANOVA test.

Results: Taeyuemjowui-tang(Taiyintiaowei-tang) administration in obese Zucker rats generated a reduction in food intake, triglyceride and free fatty acid. A significant decrease in NPY expression was observed.

Conclusions: These results suggest that Taeyuemjowui-tang(Taiyintiaowei-tang) could be effective for the treatment of obesity as an anorexigenic agent.
