Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify factors explaining caregivers¡¯ attitudes toward elders in long term care facilities.
Methods: The participants were 154 full time caregivers in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province working in one of 2 long term care facilities. Data were collected during February and March, 2012, using questionnaires which included Facts On Aging Quiz Part I (FAQ I), Semantic Differential Scale, Templer Death Anxiety, experience with older adults and general characteristics (age, educational level, marital status and religion). Data analysis was done using means, frequencies, t-test ANOVA, correlation and regression.
Results: Age and educational level showed statistically significant association with attitude toward elderly people. Caregivers who were middle school graduates and older showed a higher likelihood of positive attitudes. The burden of caregiving could be decreased with long term care insurance.
Conclusion: The findings from this study indicate that age and educational level are important variables explaining attitude of caregivers in long term facilities.
