Purpose: This study was performed to verify the effects of spiritual nursing interventions on the spiritual well-being and anxiety of elders hospitalized with cancer.
Methods: Participants in this quasi-experimental study were 50 elders who had cancer and were over 65 years of age. Spiritual well-being and anxiety were measured for both experimental group and control groups before the intervention. A spiritual nursing intervention was provided to the experimental group for 30 minutes, three times for three days. For experimental group, spiritual well-being and anxiety were re-measured after the intervention was completed. For the control group, spiritual well-being and anxiety were re-measured at day 4 after the pre-test.
Results: The results of the pretest showed that both groups were homogeneous in terms of general characteristics, disease-related characteristics, spiritual well-being and anxiety. The spiritual well-being of the experimental group increased significantly (Mann-Whitney U=172.00, p=.006) compared to the control group while anxiety decreased significantly (Mann-Whitney U=148.50, p=.001).
Conclusion: The spiritual nursing intervention was verified as an effective nursing intervention for the enhancement of spiritual well-being and decrease of anxiety in hospitalized elders with cancer.
