Comparison of General mental Health between Chronic Mentally Ill¡¯s Family and Inhabitant

Abstract

|
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the general mental health of chronic mentally ill¡¯s family and to compare with inhabitant.
Methods: The General Health Questionnaire(GHQ) was administered to 55 chronic mentally ill¡¯s family and 55 inhabitant in Naju city for comparative evaluation of general mental health.
Results: Total score of general mental health and social dysfunction score, severe depression score in chronic mentally ill¡¯s family were higher than inhabitant. In correlation between general mental health and demographic data, in chronic mentally ill¡¯s family, social dysfunction was significantly correlated with younger age and married marital status, but severe depression was significantly correlated with older age.
Conclusion: The general mental health of chronic mentally ill¡¯s family was worse than inhabitant. As a result, family support system in community mental health was considered importantly for improvement of family function as primary care-giver of the patient.
