Calcium Effects on Suppressing Growth of Celosia Seedlings with Ammonium and Other Compounds

Abstract
Relatively high levels of ammonium and other compounds were used to have suppressed germination and seedling growth (hypocotyl and radicle) of annual ornamental plant, Celosia cristata, in order to see if calcium ions overcome the suppessive growth.
Among the compounds examined, ammonium. aluminum, manganese and hydroxyquinoline were observed to indicate the calcium antagonism, whereas merculic, foric acid, Ethrel and IAA failed to show such effect.
Difference in the calcium effect among the compounds was postulated parallel to different sites of action exerted by these compounds on cell membranes, and a compound showing the calcium effect seems to have mutual site of physiological action that calcium has.
