Abstract

This study analysed the relationship between socioeconomic status indexes, such as education, income, wealth and subjective economic status, and chronic diseases prevalence. The study used the data of 445 gentlemen and 710 ladies age 65 and over from KLIPS. To estimate relative risk (odds ratio) of chronic diseases prevalence, a multiple logit regression was conducted. To get the net effect of socioeconomic factors on the chronic diseases prevalence, we added demographic and health behavior variables in the model as control variables.
We analysed various models which include ¥¡) demographic variables, such as age, absence of spouse, city, and family type, ¥¢) health behavior variables, such as (ir)regular exercise, smoking, and drinking, and ¥£) socioeconomic-status(SES) variable, such as income, education, financial asset, own-house, own real estate, and self-reporting economic status.
After controlling the effects of demographic and health behavior variables, we found substantial socioeconomic inequalities in chronic diseases prevalence and a stronger effect for education than for income and wealth for both gentlemen and ladies.
The study results suggest that health programs such as health education are needed for the lower SES people, and not only for aged people but for middle aged people to reduce health inequality.
