A Feminist Analysis on the Influences of Perception of Physical Images on School Adjustment among Female Adolescents in Korea

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study is to find out the influences of the perception and the acceptance of physical images on the school and social lives among female high school students in Korea. The overemphasis on the physical appearances and diet may cause them to be more vulnerable to other peoples judgements on their physical appearances. and consequently prevent girls from developing egalitarian sex role identity during their school period. 639 female high school students from rural and urban areas were surveyed using a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire included Mendelson, et als Body Esteem scales and Rosenbergs Self Esteem scale and school adjustment scales. The chi-square and t-test were used together with the path analysis to determine the influence of each variables. The results were as follows: 1)87.8% of the respondents were dissatisfied with their physical appearances; 2) the physical appearance was one of the most importance factors, with a belief of a overweight equal as laziness; 3) the perception was reinforced by the Mass-media and internet channels; 4) 77.9% accepted the plastic surgery might be useful in order to improve their self esteem, which may increase school adjustment level.
