Abstract
This study aims at investigating how the physical status and the economic qualities of housing affect individuals¡¯ health. The health of individual was evaluated by three aspects: the self-perceived level of health, chronic diseases, and depression. To verify the effect of housing on health, we analyzed the data from the 7th Korea Welfare Panel Study using the dichotomous logistic regression. Followings are the results. First, the physical status of housing affects the self-perceived level of health, whether getting the chronic disease, and whether getting the depression. That is, Over-crowded housing, lack of proper amenities, and poor residential environment have negative effects on the level of health. Second, the economic qualities of housing affect all three aspects of heath as well. It suggests that the families who live in their own houses healthier than who not live in the own one, because they participate more easily in community activities; children get better academic performance in school; or the members are emotionally more stable than the families renting houses.
The result shows that the housing affects the health of individuals as a environmental factor which is closely connected with their life. Especially, the housing tenure, as a socioeconomic factor, has direct or indirect effects on the health of individuals. Besides, the housing under "Minimum Housing Standard" which is suggested for the quality of amenities, structures, its efficiency and environment by Korean government has negative effects on the health.
This study suggests that the physical factors such as living space, amenities, structures, or its efficiency should be considered to improve the "Minimum Housing Standard" proposed recently by the Korean government.
