The aim of this study is to examine the relation of health status and discrepancy between objective income stratum and subjective one(upward discrepancy, consistency, and downward discrepancy). Criteria for the objective and subjective stratum was determined by family disposable income. If subjective stratum were higher than objective stratum, then the group was classified as upward discrepancy group (vice versa). For this study, the Korean Welfare Panel study data in year 2011 were analyzed with the sample including 5,508 households aged 20 and over. Self-rated health and depression were analyzed as dependent variables in the logit analysis. Empirical results showed that first, 34.0% of households showed consistency between the objective and subjective income stratum. About half (48.6%) and 17.4% of households were classified as having a downward discrepancy and upward discrepancy households, respectively. Second, upward discrepancy group was likely to assess their health as good, and there was no association between health status and downward discrepancy or consistency group. In terms of depression (high or low risk of depression), however, downward discrepancy group was likely, and upward discrepancy group was less likely to have depression compared to the consistency group. Discrepancy between the objective and subjective income stratum is associated with socio-structural inequality as well as with individual characteristics. Therefore, one should be cautious in interpreting the results and providing policy implications.
