Therapeutic Low-density Lipoprotein (LDL) Cholesterol Goals in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus
Chang Sang-Ah

Abstract
Lowering low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is the primary target for preventing cardiovascular disease (CVD). Current evidence supports that a strategy of early and aggressive lowering LDL -C level for primary and secondary prevention of CVD. Diabetic patients are highest or high risk individuals in CVD and diabetes mellitus is the coronary heart disease equivalent by National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Panel III. Therefore, based on large clinical trials, many guidelines suggest a LDL-C target is less than 100 mg/dL in diabetic patients without coronary heart disease and no additional cardio-metabolic risk factor, and less than 70 mg/dL in the patients with coronary heart disease or the patient with one or more major cardio-metabolic risk factors.
