Treatment of Central Nervous System Involvement in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus
Kim Hahn-Young

Abstract
Recent studies have demonstrated that involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) in patients with diabetes mellitus is more complicated than previously expected. In addition to cerebral infarction, in which diabetes mellitus is one of the well-known risk factors, neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer¡¯s disease and vascular dementia have also been associated with diabetes mellitus. Current evidence from epidemiological, pathological, neuroimaging, and clinical studies have demonstrated associations of dementia with vascular risk factors including diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Common vascular risk factors are shared in Alzheimer¡¯s disease and vascular dementia those are the most common causes of cognitive declinen the aging population. Understanding the roles of diabetes in the vascular and metabolic pathophysiologies of CNS disease as well as cerebral infarction, Alzheimer¡¯s disease, and vascular dementia was the focus of this review.
