Abstract
Objective: Physical pain is a major health problem and a disabling symptom of various illness. Pharmacotherapy is one of the easiest and most successful methods for controlling pain. We discussed psychiatric drugs used in treating pain.

Method: We reviewed many articles concerning about pain managements.

Results: Psychiatric drugs are analgesics in numerous pain conditions and enhancing the effects of other analgesics. Some of them, such as antidepressants and anticonvulsants have less frequent tolerance or dependence. Antidepressants and benzodiazepines decrease anxiety and insomnia in acute pain. Antidepressants are more useful adjuvant than any other psychiatric drugs and effective in treating depression in chronic pain.

Conclusion: Although many studies are poorly designed, some psychiatric drugs are nonspecific analgesics. But drug is not a panacea for pain. Treatment of pain include a combination of various biological and psychological interventions.
