Abstract

Although the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA) has been elucidated in great detail, at present no definitive treatment exist for the majority of patients suffering from this debilitating disease. Therapeutic treatment for OA includes medical administration of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, steroids, physical therapy and surgery such as osteotomy and joint replacement. Among these agents, hylauronic acid is one of the most important components of synovial fluid and plays an important role in maintaining homeostasis in synovial joint. The authors reviews many clinical studies for the proving the efficacy of the intra-atricular injection of hyaluronic acid and the experiments for finding the mechanism of hyaluronic acid in protecting the joint cartilage.
