Fibromyalgia Syndrome
Jun Jae-Bum

Abstract
Fibromyalgia syndrome is a very common and still distressful non-inflammatory rheumatic disease. It is characterized in part by central sensitization and increased pain response to peripheral nociceptive and non-nociceptive stimuli. Widespread musculoskeletal pain is the core symptom of fibromyalgia syndrome. The diagnosis of fibromyalgia syndrome is usually based on 1990 recommendations of the American College of Rheumatology classification criteria. The rapidly evolving neurophysiologic, psychophysiologic, and molecular biologic understanding of chronic pain states has already opened up new strategies for management of fibromyalgia syndrome. Rational treatment should be offered as part of a multidisciplinary treatment program utilizing both pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatment modalities.
