Abstract

Joint and soft tissue injections are potent diagnostic and therapeutic tools that have a role in the treatment of localized inflammation. These injections can be used to differentiate various clinical pain syndromes, and with adequate patient selection as well as proper injection technique, morbidity can be reduced below that encountered with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Pathologic conditions potentially improved by local corticosteroid injections include articular disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, and non articular disorders such as bursitis and tendinitis. Specific clinical entities that are amenable to treatment with local injection include impingement syndrome, adhesive capsulitis, acromio-clavicular joint and sternoclavicular joint disorders. In this review, the indications, drugs, practical guidelines and techniques for injection therapy are discussed.
