Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effect of the education of the self-help group activities in a public health center to patients with osteoarthritis in view of functional capacity.

Method: Thirty patients with degenerative joint disease were selected as the study subjects to participate in a 6-week group activities program. The self-help group activities consisted of osteoarthritis education, management of chronic pain, and learning ways to reduce stress and anxiety. Before and after the program, pliability of shoulders as assessed with the Apley scratch test, visual numerical scale of pain and fatigue, degree of extension (range of motion) of the bilateral knee joints, and scores of activities of daily living (ADL) were measured.

Results: Upon completion of the program, ADL scores, the visual numerical scale of pain and fatigue did not decrease significantly (p£¾0.05). However, the degrees of extension (range of motion) of the both knee joints increased significantly (p£¼0.01), and Apley scratch test revealed a significant decrease in distance between both middle fingers (p£¼0.01).

Conclusion: Self-help group activities of osteoarthritis patients improved knee joint range of motion and shoulder joint pliability but had little effect on pain, fatigue and the scores of activities of daily living.
