Knee Orthosis
Chun Min-Ho

Abstract
An orthosis by strict definition is a device used to straighten a limb deformity. Current knee bracing applications fall into two broad categories: injury treatment and injury prevention. With the expanded indications for knee braces, the traditional definition of a knee orthosis is inadequate. In response to the increased number of braces that became available during the 1970s and 1980s without research on their efficacy, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Sports Medicine Committee held a symposium on knee braces in August 1984. The committee classified knee braces into three types: (1) prophylactic-braces designed to prevent injury, (2) rehabilitative-braces to allow protected range of motion following injury or surgery, and (3) functional-braces to provide stability for injured, unstable, or reconstructed knees.
