Abstract
A 66 year-old male patient was diagnosed at a local clinic with compression fracture of the second lumbar verteba. Percutaneous vertebroplasty was applied to the patient. However, bilateral epidural leakage of bone cement was detected. Emergency laminectomy was performed and the patient was transferred to our hospital. The patient complained of motor and sensory impairment of bilateral lower extremities. Radiologic findings revealed epidural bone cement leakage compressing the cauda equina, and neurologic and electrodiagnostic studies confirmed the diagnosis of cauda equina syndrome. During the decompression and spinal stabilization operation, abnormal bone marrow findings were detected. Biopsy results were compatible with multiple myeloma. We report a case of multiple myeloma in a patient with cauda equina syndrome following percutaneous vertebroplasty. This case exemplifies the importance of thorough evaluation before performing vertebroplasty and of exercising extreme caution during this procedure.
