Abstract
The rupture of pectoralis major muscle is relatively rare. It usually occurs during sports activity, or at work, after extreme muscle tension or direct trauma, although spontaneous rupture has been reported. We report a case of a 48-year-old male with hypoxic brain injury due to cardiac arrest, who developed rupture of pectoralis major muscle after admission. Patient was wheelchair-bound, fully dependent, and cognitively impaired. The pectoral ecchymosis extending to the axilla was found when patient was being dressed in the at morning. Physical examination revealed swelling and focal heating on lateral aspect of left pectoralis major muscle. Ultrasonography and computerized tomography of left chest and shoulder showed a wide intramuscular hematoma, lateral aspect of the pectoralis major muscle. Sonographically guided percutaneous aspiration for drainage was revealed hematoma. Intravenous antibiotics, antispastic drugs, proper positioning were prescribed to control his condition. Ultrasonography for follow-up showed scar change of pectoralis major muscle, no hematoma and the patient¡¯s symptoms gradually improved.
