Rupture of the Pectoralis Major Muscle Presenting as a Periareolar Ecchymosis of the Breast -A Case Report-

Abstract
The rupture of pectoralis major muscle is relatively rare. Although spontaneous rupture has been reported, it usually occurs during sports activity, or at work, after extreme muscle tension or direct trauma. Generally, case of pectoralis major muscle¡¯s rupture is accompanied by severe pain and hematoma around axilla. We report a case of a 71-year-old female with pectoralis major muscle rupture, which was noted 1 day after table tennis and presented with moderate chest pain and periareolar round dark-red ecchymosis. Initially, the impression was benign or malignant breast problem. After physical examination and ultrasonographic exam, it was diagnosed as partial pectoralis major muscle rupture. After 6 weeks of follow-up, the pain showed much improvement.
