The purpose of this study was to administer online imagery rescripting (IR) to adolescents with social anxiety disorder (SAD) and to test the efficacy of the treatment as a pilot study. Twelve adolescents diagnosed with SAD were randomized to an IR group and a wait-list control (WC) group, and the treatment group received three sessions of IR. Images associated with negative self-imagery, adverse past memories, social anxiety symptoms, dysfunctional beliefs, and core beliefs were measured at pre-, post-, and 4-week follow-ups. We conducted repeated measures ANOVA and paired samples t-tests for each group. First, there was no statistically significant interaction between two groups for image vividness and distress, but only the IR group showed a significant decrease in image distress from pre- to post-test and from pre- to follow-up test using paired samples t-tests. Second, memory vividness did not have a significant interaction between two groups, but memory distress had a statistical trend between two groups, and a paired-sample t-test showed that only the IR group significantly reduced memory distress from pre- to post-test and from pre- to follow-up test. Third, for social interaction and performance anxiety, no significant interaction was found between two groups, but a paired samples t-test showed a statistical trend in the reduction of performance anxiety from pre- to post for the treatment group only. Finally, there was no significant interaction between the two groups for dysfunctional beliefs and core beliefs. However, only in the IR group, a paired-sample t-test showed a statistical trend toward reducing dysfunctional beliefs from the pre- to post-test and from the pre- to follow-up test and a statistically significant decrease in core beliefs at both time points. This study is meaningful in that it demonstrates the clinical utility of administering an IR protocol to adolescents online.
