A Review of Experimental Research on Community-based Instruction for Students with Disabilities

Abstract
Community-based instruction(CBI) is one of the most effective techniques to improve skill acquisition and generalization of newly learned skills to everyday living environments. Community-based instruction is a comprehensive approach to promote community integration and successful adult life adjustment especially for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The purpose of this study was to review the research literature of community-based instruction and to provide information and suggestions on community-based instruction practices and future research. A systematic search of the literature from 2000 to 2007 revealed 10 experimental studies published in major special education journals. This study analyzed the 10 selected studies in terms of 11 analytic variables: participants, research settings, experimental design, training program and strategies, target skills, method of measurement, inter-observer reliability, social validation, treatment fidelity, results, maintenance and generalization. In particular, this study focused primary on community-based instruction components and target skills of the analyzed studies. In general, this review study showed that community-based instruction programs were effective in teaching community living skills and improving generalization of learned skills to community settings for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The findings of this study were described in detail based on the 11 analytic variables. Implications of the findings and recommendation for practice and future research on community-based instruction were presented.
