Abstract

The number of rehabilitation professionals and the population of persons with severe disability, especially in the area of psychiatric and developmental disability, have been dramatically increasing in Korea. Special education teachers, trainers, and professionals in rehabilitation facilities and educational settings have been exposed to and suffered from biting, beating, and other types of sudden physical attack endangering their personal and occupational safety and health. However, systematic research efforts to minimize violent behaviors inflicted on rehabilitation service users and care takers have never been initiated. Therefore, identifying various types and contents of crisis behaviors and coping techniques should be the focus of this study and be fully understood in the academic and clinical context. Training needs among majority of vocational rehabilitation professionals were shown very high and indicative of weaknesses of the current rehabilitation education field.
