Predictors of Burnout among Direct Service Providers at Centers for Independent Living in the United States
Shin Sook-Kyung

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the levels of burnout among direct service providers at Center for independent living in Region ¥´ of the United States, and to identify the demographic characteristics of the service providers as predictors of burnout. Two hundred eighteen CIL providers in the area were finally participated in this study. Results showed that the respondents had average level of emotional exhaustion, high level of depersonalization, and low level of personal accomplishment in categorization of Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) scores. This result indicated that the direct service providers who are independent living specialists, who work less than 41 hours per week, and who have worked more than 5 years of experience in human service were more likely to experience more emotional exhaustion than other groups. Another finding of this study was that younger direct service providers and these working in rural centers experienced greater depersonalization than those who are more than 41 years old and work in urban and suburban centers. The results also indicated that more working providers were prone to lack of personal accomplishment. Results of this study offer some applications for administrators and for professions in centers for independent living. The providers may learn stress copying skill to avoid feelings of burnout, especially these who are independent living specialist and younger providers, and work less than 40 years, less than 5 years in human service and rural. The administrators may be aware that enhancing organizational support is one way to reduce feelings of emotional exhaustion, prevent depersonalization, and enhance personal accomplishment.
