The Effects of Social Function and Symptoms on the Quality of Life among the Mentally Ill Living in the Community

This study was conducted to find out the effects of social function and symptoms of the mentally ill on their quality of life. The subjects of this study were the 240 mentally ill, who were residing in community. The results of this study are as follows.
First, the economic status of the mentally ill had significant effect on their quality of life. The lower their economic status, their quality of life was lower. Second, social function of the mentally ill had significant effect on their quality of life but their symptoms had no significant effect. This result means the mentally ill with higher social function have higher quality of life. Third, the effect of social function was stronger than the one of symptoms on the quality of life among the mentally ill. Based on these findings, the effects of social function of the mentally ill on their quality of life were identified. The practical strategies of intervention to improve their quality of life for the mentally ill were suggested.
