A Study on the Present Status of Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy Present Status in Day Care Center for the Elderly in Seoul

Abstract
Objective: This study intended to suggest that present status of occupational therapy in day care center for elderly by comparing the present status of occupational therapy and physical therapy on seoul. Another purpose of this study was to provide the basic data to develop the policies and system in day care center for the elderly.

Methods: This study was performed from May 18th to May 22nd, 2009. Subjects were eighty-two day care center in seoul. Data were collected by telephone survey and collected data were analyzed by the descriptive statistic.

Results: The results of this study were follow: 1) Although physical therapy room was established in 36 centers of 82 day care centers for the elderly, occupational therapy room was established in the 3 among 82 day care center for the elderly. 2) Physical therapists are employed 46 people, but occupational therapists are employed only 3 people. 3) Physical therapy program service provide in 53 place of 82 day care center for the elderly, but occupational therapy program service enforces in 49 place of 82 day care center for the elderly.

Conclusion: The result indicated that 1) Employment of occupational therapists and establishment of therapy room was lower than that of physical therapy. 2) They have need of system basis for occupational therapist employment and occupational therapy room so that these problems would be improved on placement human resource standards in day care center for the elderly. 3) We consider that day care center makes on effect to announce them necessity and feasibility of occupational therapy.
