Osteoporosis and Atherosclerosis
Choi Hee-Jeong

Abstract
Osteoporosis and atherosclerosis are chronic degenerative diseases with high incidence in the general population and represent two of the major health problem. Also, these two diseases show a high rate of morbidity and mortality. Osteoporosis and atherosclerosis have been considered to be independent diseases, whose common characteristic is increasing with aging. At present, growing evidence indicates the existence of association between these two diseases that is largely independent age, smoking and physical activity. Although definitive proof of a pathophysiological link between osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease is lacking, common signaling pathways, transcription factors and extracellular matrix interactions may account for both skeletal and vascular abnormalities. The mechanism of arterial calcification resembles the process of osteogenesis, involving various cells, non-collagen bone matrix proteins and inflammatory cytokines that lead to tissue mineralization. Understanding many factors influencing the biological linkages that regulate osteoporosis and atherosclerosis makes the development of dual-purpose therapies that may enhance bone density and limit atherosclerosis, possible. The author reviews the factors responsible for atherosclerotic diseases that correlate with low bone mineral density.
