Effects of methanol and water extracts obtained from sea tangle (Laminaria spp.) on antibody production from splenocytes isolated from normal and diabetes-induced mice were tested. Methanol extract of sea tangle had a significant stimulatory effect at low concentration of 0.1§¶/mL, but not at 1 and 5§¶/mL, whereas water extract had effects at high concentration of 100§¶/mL but not at 10§¶/mL. IgG productions from both normal and diabetic spleen cells increased by adding methanol extract at 0.1§¶/mL, and water extract at 10 and 100§¶/mL. IgG production was about 22% lower in diabetic spleen cells than normal cells. IgM production was not different between normal and diabetic cells and was enhanced by methanol extract at 0.15§¶/mL and water extract at 10 and 100§¶/mL. These results indicate that sea tangle extracts stimulate immunoglobulin production not only via lymphocyte proliferation but also via other cellular activity. Augmentation of humoral immune function by sea tangle extracts helped reduce infections in diabetic mice.
