Abstract

|
Carotenoids were extracted from Citrus Unshiu peel using supercritical CO©ü. Three levels of parameters, temperature (40,55,and 70¡É), pressure(13.8, 27.6, and 41.4 MPa)and ethanol co-solvent concentration (0,5,and 10%) were used as the independent variables of central composite rotate design. Optimal processing conditions were determined through the response surface methodology(RSM). The extracting pressure, temperature, and pressure temperature interaction significantly affected the extraction yields of total carotenoids and ¥â-cryptoxanthin from C. Unshiu peel, whereas interaction of extracting temperature and pressure including ethanol concentration had no significant effect. The optimal processing conditions were: extracting pressure 36.0 and 36.2 MPa, extracting temperature 66.5 and 66.0 ethanol concentration 5.93 and 6.27% for total carotenoids and ¥â-cryptoxanthin, respectively. Optimal values predicted by RSM were 72.4 and 3.10 ppm for total carotenoids and ¥â-cryptoxanthin, respectively.
