Objective: This study aimed to analyze the epidemiological characteristics of adverse drug reactions (ADR) from a socioeconomic standpoint by comparing health insurance and medical aid patients.
Methods: We reviewed hospital patient data from January 2017 to December 2019. For descriptive analysis, we stratified the data according to the type of health insurance. We used logistic regression analysis to identify the risk factors for severe ADRs.
Results: During the study period, 2,247 cases were reported by 1,369 patients. Among these patients, 987 belonged to the health insurance group (72.1%) and 382 belonged to the medical aid group (27.9%). In health insurance group, ADRs were most prevalent in women (57.8%) while men (52.9%) were more susceptible in the medical aid group. In the health insurance group, although the frequency of ADRs was higher in those living with a partner (74.1%) those who were single had a higher risk of developing severe ADRs (adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 1.20, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.48-3.01). Similar results were also observed in the medical aid group (aOR: 1.56, 95% CI: 0.48-5.01). In terms of severity, the incidence of severe reactions was higher in the medical aid group (3.1%) compared to the health insurance group (1.9%). Women with health insurance and men with medical aid were more likely to be reported severe ADRs.
Conclusion: Socioeconomic information, including the type of health insurance and marital status, was associated different characteristics of ADRs. The results of our study may provide meaningful insight into identifying at-risk groups for ADRs.
