Effects of Acute Salbutamol Inhalation on Blood Energy Substrates and Physical Fitness in Healthy Adolescents

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of salbutamol as a ¥â2-agonist inhalation on blood profiles and physical fitness in healthy adolescents (n = 10). Before and after salbutamol inhalation, blood profiles and physical fitness were measured in ten healthy adolescents with/without salbutamol trial. Isokinetic power test results were enhanced by salbutamol inhalation at 240o/sec in extension and 180o/sec and 240o/sec in flexion (p < .05). Lung vital capacity and its ratio were tended to increase in salbutamol group but it was not statistically significant. Sit-ups, grip strength, and reaction time were significantly enhanced by salbutamol inhalation (p < .05). Glucose and FFA concentrations were significantly increased within SAL group and between groups (p < .05). Epinephrine and norepinephrine concentrations were significantly increased within groups (p < .05). And it were significantly increased in SAL group (p < .05). These results suggested that salbutamol ingestion enhances exercise performance with short-term or acute use. Long-term use of salbutamol, however, might cause some kind of side-effects. Therefore, using salbutamol might be considered to counselling with an expert.
