Abstract
Parkinson?s disease (PD) is primarily characterized by movement symptoms such as resting tremors, bradykinesia, rigidity, and postural instability, up to 85% of PD patients also experience pain. As such, pain may be a major complaint of PD patients and, in cases with severe pain, movement is limited by pain, which can mask motor symptoms. Disruption of peripheral nociception or alteration in central pain processing is thought to be the main mechanism of pain in PD patients. Pain in PD can be classified into musculoskeletal pain, dystonic pain, radicular/neuropathic pain, central pain, and akathisia, with musculoskeletal pain being the most common. Depending on the etiology of the pain, treatments such as dopaminergic medication, non-dopaminergic medication, botulinum toxin, and deep brain stimulation can be used. In this review, we provide an overview of the clinical manifestations and pathophysiology of pain in PD and summarize the available treatment options.
