Successful Treatment of Cardiac Tamponade Associated with Umbilical Venous Catheter by Pericardiocentesis in Two Neonates: Two Case Reports

Abstract
Pericardial effusion is rare in neonates. The most common cause of pericardial effusion is iatrogenic due to malposition of the central venous catheters and symptoms range from asymptomatic to more serious presentations such as cardiac tamponade. Cardiac tamponade is a potentially fatal complication for neonates with umbilical venous catheters and requires prompt diagnosis and management. Here, we have reported on cases of two neonates with pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade after umbilical venous catheter insertion and successfully treated by bedside echocardiography-guided pericardiocentesis. These cases report that neonates with pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponate due to umbilical venous catheter could be fully recovered without any complications if they are diagnosed in a timely manner through bedside echocardiography and receive urgent pericardiocentesis by neonatologist.
