Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate women¡¯s knowledge and screening behaviors for breast cancer in Sokcho Kangwon-do by survey.

Materials and Methods: This study included 34 inhabitant women, who participated voluntarily in free screening program for early detection of breast cancer. The questionnaire was composed of age of participant, questions for knowledge of breast cancer, attitude and behaviors related to breast cancer screening. The age of participants ranged from 24 to 67 years (mean age; 44.2 years). We compared this study with previous studies performed in Hwasun-gun, Seoul, Pusan, Chun-choen and Daejeon.

Results: 55.9% (19/34) of participants had been performed breast self examination and 50% (17/34) of participants had been underwent screening mammography. Significantly many participants had been underwent screening mammography in same or older than 40 years of age (p < .001). The most frequent cause of breast cancer screening was regular check-up (9/17, 52.9%) and the most frequent barrier was inconvenience of take time (5/17, 29.4%). In knowledge of breast cancer, the mean value of corrected answers was 2.2 out of 5.

Conclusion: This was conducted as the sixth survey after Daejeon and these data suggest that active public relations and education are essential for early detection of breast cancer. This study may be applied to plan and develop screening program.
