A study on Fall experience in Inpatients of Children

Abstract
Purpose: This study was designed to invastigate the fall experiencein in inpatients of children.

Method: The medical records of 68 inpatients of children were reviewed. The data collected from January to July 2003. Frequencies, percentage points and cross- tab were done using the SPSS program.

Result: 1) General character : sex(boy : 21 inpatients (47.7%)), age(1¢¦3 : 20¡¯s(64.5%)), diagnosis department (7¡¯s of surgical : 50%), admission(11¡¯s of ER : 52.4%), admisson method (3¡¯s of wheel chair : 60.0%), operation (18¡¯s of Yes :50.0%), skin disorder(4¡¯s of fall experiens : 66.7%) are higher on each factor. 1 inpatient of gastrointestinal disorder(33.3%), 5¡¯s of pulmonary disorder(38.5%), 2¡¯s of visual disorder(66.7%) have fall experience. 32 children(48.5%) have fall experience with parents.(without parents : 0%) In spite of fall education, 31 children on primary education(46.3%), 25¡¯s on reeducation(44.6%) have fall experience. Differences in fall by assessment of risk factor group are 22¡¯s of Have group(47.8%) and 10¡¯s of None group. 2) Fall experience result by groups : sex(2.62¡¾0.93), body balance(1.10¡¾1.44), depression(0.03¡¾0.18), medication(0.17¡¾0.46), total score or risk factor(5.86¡¾3.94) are high on fall experience group. Hospital day(2.95¡¾0.32), fall history(0.2¡¾(0.82), agitation(0.13¡¾0.41), anxiety(0.13¡¾0.41), visual conditions(0.26¡¾0.82), communication(0.61¡¾1.19) chronic disease(0.26¡¾0.61) are high on non fall experience group. 3) Falls occured during day time(37.5%), evening time(34.4%) and night time(28.1%). The palces of fall accident were hospital bed(90.6%) and floors(3.1%). Anatomical locations of injuries by falls were head(62.5%), face(31.3%) and lower limbs(6.3%). Types of injuries were hematoma(37.5%), abrasion(12.5%) and fracture(12.5). Treatment of injuries by falls were observation(87.5%) and simple dressing(9.4%).

Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that broad intervention program should be provided to prevent related to inpatients of children¡¯s fall.
