The Effect of Aroma Inhalation Method on the Preoperative Anxiety & Safety of Ophthalmic Surgical Patients

Abstract
Purpose: The study was done to analyze the effects of Aroma Inhalation Method on the preoperative anxiety
and safety of Ophthalmic surgical patients.

Method: The data were collected from September 1 to December 5, 2009 at C Medical center in Seoul. The subjects were forty patients that were operated on under general anesthesia for Ophthalmic surgery. twenty patiens were classified as the experimental group that had the aroma inhalation and 20 of them as the control group that did not
have the aroma inhalation. Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) was used to anxiety and General Comfort Questionnaire
(GCQ) was used to safety on all patients the day before Ophthalmic surgery and the preoperative period.

Result: Hypothesis 1, 2, 3 and 5 were surported but Hypothesis 4 didn¡¯t surported.

Conclusion: The aroma inhalation method can be considered an effected nursing intervention that relieves the preoperative anxiety of ophthalmic surgical patients and stabilizes vital signs.
