This study investigated the recognition of night eating and nutrition knowledge by gender among high school students (n=516) in Gyeonggi area. The data were collected using face-to-face interviews and questionnaire surveys, and analyzed using the chi-square and t-tests. The subjects were comprised of boys of 48.4% and girls of 51.6%. Recognition of harmfulness of nigh eating was higher in girls (72.6%) when compared with boys (44.0%) (P<0.001). The main reason was ¡®obesity (the boys, 50.0%; the girls, 58.0%)¡¯ and ¡®stomach disorder (the boys, 22.7%; the girls, 31.1%) (P<0.01). Nutrition knowledge was higher in girls with regards to general information [night eating and lifestyle disease (P<0.01), night eating and nutritional balance (P<0.05)], obesity [skinny fat (P<0.001), obesity and heart attack (P<0.01), obesity and respiratory and sleep disorders (P<0.05)], diabetes [excessive eating sugar and diabetes (P<0.05)], sleep [deep sleep and energy (P<0.01)], and immunity [lifestyle and immune system (P<0.01)] when compared with boys. In conclusion, recognition and nutrition knowledge related to night eating were generally higher in girls than in boys. Therefore, nutrition education program for healthier night eating habit should be developed with consideration to gender characteristics among high school students.
