Abstract

|
Prion disease is a new emerging infectious disease introduced into modern society by industrial cannibalism. Widespread recycling of the cattle product for the animal feeding has introduced prion disease into the human food chain. The author reviewed a biological and historical aspect of prion disease in animals and humans. Epidemiologic prediction shows that prion disease will be prevalent along the 21st century. To deal with prion disease, which is caused by a pathogen with quite a new property, new paradigm of food safety and safety standard of medical supply system including the concept of sterilization and blood transfusion is needed. In addition to technological innovation, safety of human food chain in relation to meat product needs to be more eco-friendly. More effective and active risk communication is also needed.
